MOTOR ASPECTS OF WRITING
Motor aspects of writing are the skills it takes to be able to write or produce writing. Visual perception, neuromuscular abilities, motor skills, cognition and social emotional factors are all factors when being able to produce writing.

2 Low Tech Tools
- 1. Pencil grip- A pencil grip is a device that aides the student in holding the pencil correctly while writing. They can be pre-made, foam or cushions on the end of the pencil to place the students fingers in the correct spots.
- 2. Slant board- A slant board is made of plastic that angles the children’s writing area to promote proper wrist position while writing. The device is higher at the top of the paper and angles downward. The slant board also promotes proper posture and stability while writing.
2 Mid Tech Tools
- 1. Language master- The language master is an electronic device that contains cards, which are approximately 3" by 8" with a recordable strip on the bottom. The cards are placed through the player like a credit card. A short verbal message can be recorded on each card along with a visual cue if needed. This device can be used for a child who is unable to imitate language. This device can be used as a model for imitation or in social interactions. The child uses the language cards and states the sentence along with the language master.
- 2. Portable Word Processor- A portable word processor can be used by students during note taking or any other writing task. The device is a complete keyboard with basic editing commands, spell check, Spanish to English dictionary and a thesaurus. An example of a portable word processor is a Neo 2. The Neo 2 has a longer battery life than a laptop, simple on off switch with no wait time, durable exterior, and is inexpensive.
2 High Tech Tools
- 1. Computer with Voice recognition software- This technology enables a student to turn their speech into text with the use of a software program on their computer. The students can operate their computer using voice commands, and speak into it and it types notes for them. An examples of speech recognition software is Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
- 2.Alternate keyboards- Big keys is a type of alternate keyboard which is bigger in size or in ABC order. The keys are larger for children with motor or cognitive challenges.
